| It's been 19 hours since I landed in Toronto, and now I finally have a chance to sit down and write a bit about what happened in the last 19 hours. I was originally going to fly to Ottawa and then get rerouted to Toronto last night, making my arrival time midnight. However, when I got to the airport, I found out that the flight leaving from Boston was delayed, meaning that by the time I got to Ottawa, I would have definitely missed the flight home. Having experienced this once in the past, I spoke to a representative behind the counter and he kindly rebooked my flight. Sighs... If only someone did that for me last time, then it'd have been a much more enjoyable experience. Anyways, so I got home at around 11pm. Before I left Boston though, I had learned of the Perseid meteor shower and that it would be at its peak last night, and I really wanted to see it. Knowing that my folks would probably skin me alive if I left the house 2 minutes after I just stepped in, I thought all day on Saturday about how I could sneak out of the house unnoticed. Thankfully, an idea was suggested to me to make it seem like I hadn't planned the excursion at all. Hehe... I asked my folks if they wanted to travel a bit more north with me to watch it. Having said this, I'd be doomed if they said yes. Hehehe... luckily, they said no...so I pouted a bit and said that I really wanted to see it and told them I'd find someone else to go with me. Hehehe...a few phone calls later, I was out the door and on my way with Alex to get Marj and meet Grant and Mike. The four of us (excluding Mike), finally set out to find a nice dark piece of land in which to observe the spectacular view that awaited us. Stouffville Road's a really freaky strip by the way. It was either the darkness and silence that gave me the creeps, or it could've been the topic of discussion that Grant and I started up in the car that added to the spookiness: UFOs and ghosts. Then when we stopped off on the side of one road, Alex decided to say something about how the scenery seemed like the ones in movies where the characters get chased and killed by some mad and deranged serial killer. What a way to start the night! We stood there on the empty road looking up at the sky and the hundreds of stars blinking back at us. After about 10-15 minutes, we heard dogs barking from the direction of the house we were closest to. Hahaha... we knew they weren't coming our way, but in case they woke up the owners, we decided that we didn't want to get shot; so off we went again back to a conservation area we passed by on the way to continue our gaze into the heavens. As much as we all wanted to see the meteor shower, we didn't prepare very well for it. First of all, none of us (last of all me) expected it to be so chilly last night. Only Marj had a long sleeve on and Alex had to roll down his sleeves to cover his arms while Grant and I had no sleeves to roll. There was a blanket that was the perfect size for the 4 of us to lie down on if we all layed on our sides. Grant saved us by pulling out a fleece blanket that was also the perfect size to cover the 4 of us, sparing us from the shivers. And no one had a star chart! And so there we were, 4 weirdos, laying on our backs/sides on a strip of grass in the dark at a deserted conservation park that was off a road that was patrolled regularly by cops. I think it was only be sheer luck that no cops found us! Half way through our watch, a car started coming into the park, but it seemed like it was trying to do a 3-point turn. After about a minute or two, the car rolled into the park towards us. The 4 of us froze in our spots, not knowing whether it was a cop or not, or whether or not we should get up and make a run for it (before we had said that we'd make a run for it if it was cops). Finally we decided to pretend that we don't exist and that we didn't see the strangers driving by. However, they hardly failed to notice our presence and stopped to ask if we were ok. I think they probably thought we were dead...hehehe... anyways, we told them about the meteor shower and after about 5 minutes, they finally left us. Grant thinks they were looking for a place to smoke up. My first impression was that the driver was buzzed. But after that, there were no more interruptions...except for Marj scaring herself with her hair and the crickets. The hour and a half that we spent staring up into the sky was one of the most beautiful moments I can remember. The silence of the night was truncated by gasps and ooohs and ahhhs as well as frequent blurbs about UFOs and aliens. Grant and I agreed that it'd be scarier to confront an alien than a ghost, but Alex insisted that ghosts are worse because they can go inside you and possess your body! LOL!!! Stars apparently flicker and leap around in little circles if you look at them one at a time and satellites move very fast across the sky. No matter how many we saw last night, each time gold and silver streaked over the sky, it created an atmosphere of awe and tranquility. How amazing it is, that something so far away, can touch us so. Sighs... Quotes: Alex: "I want to see a meteor and a satellite come crashing into each other." Ranee: "Hey...how is that star moving?... oh wait, they're all moving!" So I spent the first 5 hours of being home with my friends, freezing outside under the heavens and having a wonderful time rather than in the comforts of my own bed. Well traded! Well, after spending the first hours and night not at home, one could hardly say no to my mother when she dragged me out of the house this morning for dim sum with my aunt. Sighs... 2 hours... food was great... the company was alright...could've been better though. And then we drove all around the GTA running errands for them: Markham Road, Finch/Leslie, Leslie/16th, Markham, and finally home. When we finally got back at 3ish, I got blessed with the duties of sorting out the contracts for the phone bills and cleaning up the computer at home. Mom also showed me the photos she and Dad took when they visited the Maritimes. Hehee...the 2 look so cute. Just now at dinner, I noticed a couple bottles of strawberry flavoured Smirnoff Ice in the fridge. Thinking that it was weird because nowhere in my living memory did I ever tell my folks I drank anything aside from juice, water, and pop; and I was positive my sister wouldn't be daring enough to put them there. So upon asking her who bought them, this is the story she gave me: Sighs...don't ask. We're such idiots! We went to PEI and NB and NS and your Dad bought one to try one day. We thought that they were really cool because they came in all sorts of flavours and that you and your sister might like them. So we bought a few. Afterwards, we were wondering that maybe a few bottles may not be enough, so we bought some more at the next LCBO we saw. All along the rest of the trip, we were carrying them in the luggage and was afraid of breaking them. When we got home and showed Elise...she sighed and told us that they have them here too! And I was like...what??? LOL LOL LOL!!! Oh man...my folks are too too funny! I can't believe they did that! First of all, they bought us booze as a souvenir. Second of all, they didn't make the connection that LCBO was everywhere and could possibly carry the same merchandise. Lastly, they thought it was cool and had never heard of it! Sighs... I don't know whether to laugh or to hit myself in the head for their innocence. I'm in absolute disbelief though. LOL! Oh man... good stories and more to come. This is just my first day back! | | |
| So far, everyone who has come to visit Boston as a tourist has loved it! "It's the most beautiful city..." "I love it..." etc. Sighs...if only they knew. Of course every city has its treasures and its dumps, and I believe that opinions about a certain place should be given in politically correct terms such as, "I love the places that we visited..." or "The X area is one of the most beautiful I've seen..." etc. So why am I writing this? Well... everyone who's been here for at least a day and has walked around a bit knows that Mass. Ave. is the grossest, ugliest, loudest, dirtiest, smelliest, and dangerous streets of Boston. It's also one of the biggest since it does run right through the city and everything else kind of branches off it, so there's no avoiding it if you drive unless you want to get stuck in the small streets just trying to get out of the one ways. I happened to be walking along Mass. Ave. earlier this evening (but it was still light outside) and this guy (bum really) was walking in the opposite direction towards me. Just as we were passing each other, he tried to kiss me! Can you say "UGH!"? I know I can! Needless to say I ran like the wind...even on a bad ankle...probably why it hurts so much more now! But anyways...ewww...that was an utterly disturbing experience...worse than any I've ever had in my life! I can still hear that smooching sound...ugha... puke!!! I don't even know if this happens in downtown Toronto, which I believe has a very interesting selection of bums in and of itself! Anyways... hope some of you have learned that one must not judge a place based on a few days stay here! Haha... I probably paint the ugliest picture of Boston known to man!

| A short moment in life...a brief moment in time...with nothing but a sigh and a wish...
8:10pm on July 25th. I was walking home from a cafe tonight when the distinct sound of saxophone and trumpet drifted through the air to me. Immediately I thought of you. As I wandered towards the sound of the music, I came upon a small community park where a small group of neighbourhood folks have gathered around a small jazz band playing in the warm summer night. There were kids running around, some folks were dancing with their spouse, younger people were hanging out and chilling with the person they hold dear in their hearts, and groups of friends sat on the dried yellowed grass enjoying one of the most beautiful things in life. As I sat down on an empty patch of grass and looked up at the stars in the quickly darkening sky, I too got lost in the enchanted moment and forgot that I was in a bustling city and not a small cozy town. Sometimes, I wish I wasn't alone so often. I think that you'd have enjoyed this the most; and how perfect would it be if we could have sat there on that empty patch of grass and looked up at the stars in the quickly darkening sky together, with nothing but the sound of saxophone and trumpet surrounding us.

| Story of the day, which has a little bit to do with yesterday, so I'll do a quickie of yesterday: I ran out of groceries and food...well, pretty much considering all I had left were rice noodles and oatmeal and you can't make anything with those...well, that's not true either but no one including myself would want to eat the combo. Anyways, so after class last night, I went to get some frozen veggies and some kind of meat (that was all I planned to get). I ended up coming home with an extra 1.5lbs of blueberries, 1lb of chocolate chip cookies, and a large bag of goldfish snacks. Sighs...I still haven't learned not to grocery shop when I'm hungry yet!
So that brings me to today: because the blueberries were so cheap ($5 for 3 boxes), I decided that today after class, I'd go get some more since today is the last day of the sale. Thankfully, class ended at 8 instead of 8:30pm. But when I got home, I was contemplating on whether or not to go out because I was feeling a bit lazy and I didn't want to sweat anymore nor do I want to put myself through another cold shower. Well, the blueberries won! So I dropped off my stuff at home and headed out. I went to CVS (like Shoppers) first to see if they had any duct tape first (they didn't, but they had an ice cream sale - I'm so proud of myself I didn't buy any)! On the way from CVS to Shaw's (like Longo's), I walked by a couple with 2 ginormous backpacks and a map out. So I asked if they needed any help. Turns out the hostel they booked wouldn't let them in because they couldn't find their names on the booking list, and in order for them to get the reference number, they needed access to a computer. I was stumped. I had no idea where (if there were any) internet cafes were. So since I lived relatively close to where I found them, I brought them to my place where they could check their emails for the number. Hahaha... so I gave 2 Australians a small blurb about Boston. Rebecca's 23 years old who just finished studying photography and Tom's 24 who just finished law school. Both have been traveling the world. They went from Australia to California (LA and SF included), to NYC, and now to Boston. Their next stop is Montreal and then London, England. Basically, they've started traveling since May and are going to spend the next 10 months traveling the rest of the world including Europe, India and the rest of Asia. I was just amazed and so so jealous! To have the time and money to travel the world with your best friend or significant other is like a dream. Sighs... in another life. Anyways, so after I brought Rebecca in and they got the number, I dropped them off where I found them and thus ended our short encounter.
At this point, I still haven't gotten what I had left the house to do: to get more blueberries! So off I went again to Shaw's for the blueberries. This time, I also picked up 2 boxes of raspberries. Hehehe... as I was walking home, I noticed a girl walking in front me (I rarely notice things or people around me when I walk because I'm usually in my own little world). She caught my eye for some reason. Anyways, I had just walked by her when I heard a guy call out "excuse me." He was calling to her and told her that she had dropped her purse/wallet at the corner of the street. I stopped and turned around because I've been walking behind her the entire time and as far as I was concerned, she hadn't dropped anything. Turns out the guy was trying to pick her up and she wasn't taking the bait. He also had 2 other buddies who were waiting close by snickering in the background. Being the nosy person that I am, I piped in and asked if everything was ok... the guy responded rather than the girl. I'm not an idiot, I'm not going to take his word! So I stood there waiting for her to brush him off or for him to leave her alone. The guy was persistent damnit! She tried walking away and I walked close by before he finally stopped following her.
So tonight, I received two thank yous from complete strangers whom I'd never ever meet again. I wonder whether there would've been someone else to play the roles I played tonight had I not left for my blueberries twice? I don't know if other people do this kind of thing or not...like stop and go out of their way to help others. Helping the Australians was completely out the way: I had to go back home without getting my blueberries, leave my apartment again to show them the way, and then get the blueberries. Helping the girl was sort of on the way. Thinking retrospectively, if the guys were really serious, we'd be in serious trouble. I guess my sister was right all these years (I look scary in the dark). Hehe... At the same time, I think that had I not stopped both times, I would be thinking about these people for awhile and wonder what had happened.
Oh well! C'est la vie! I only hope that if I were ever in these situations, there'd be someone there to help me.
